When I decided to start an online marketing business my goal was to share practical business knowledge with people who have never ran or started a business. The idea is to help someone who has the interest and drive to become an entrepreneur but has no clue how or where to start. With that in mind I knew that I could share this information and also provide good resources for educational products to help them on their way.
Soon after I began doing my own research into how to create this business model, I realized that about 90 percent of the programs to make money online are either a joke or a complete scam. Because of the demographic I was targeting (mainly beginners) I knew that it would be completely unethical to take advantage of their ignorance and sell them some hyped up scam just so I could make a quick buck. I have learned that your reputation online can be a great equalizer with your competition – If you become trustworthy people will buy from you because of it.
I dug in further and finally found some legitimate products that provide quality information that is worth the price you would pay for it. Fortunately because it was so difficult to find these sources I learned some tactics for how to screen out the junk and what to look for in a good program.
If you haven’t done it already, you need to find a subject or category of products you believe in. If you are passionate about golf, then you should look for legitimate products about improving your game for example. Also, if it is something you already have knowledge about, it will be easier to sniff out the B.S.
Clickbank is the most popular source for finding affiliate programs to resell and you can get plenty of information about how a product has performed in the past. However, sometimes products that are scams do well because they have good sales pages. Make sure you scour the squeeze page of whatever program you are looking at. If it promises too much, chances are that it is a program designed just to take peoples money and not provide any "real" value.
Be sure to check the refund rates of the product. Clickbank provides this information for you and this can be a "tell all" if it looks like a high percentage of purchasers ask for their money back stay away.
Finally, you can look for a way to contact the creator of the product. Usually there is a contact page at the bottom of the website or look for an "affiliates" link there too. If you find an e-mail address, drop them a quick note and ask them if you can preview the product before you decide to recommend it through whatever sales funnel you are using. Give them a link to your website so they know you are legitimate and not just looking for a free product.
I cannot stress enough how important your image is if you are looking to create a profitable business online. The internet is like the modern "wild west" trustworthy people and websites are the ones that are going to be successful. Put people first and the profits will come over time. One of the best ways to ensure you have taken care of your customers is to make sure you don’t sell them a product or program that isn’t going to deliver what it promises. If they are unsuccessful it will be because of their own shortcomings not because you set them up for failure with a bad product.
